Hollow Dawn Recipe: Lady Virtue’s Socialite Shortbread

Updated: Apr 23, 2020

In House Straavin entertaining guests properly is extremely important. No matter if they are your arch political rival, when a person comes into your home you treat them well. Plus, it never hurts to have them distracted by the song and dance of socializing while you prepare to drain them dry, metaphorically speaking of course.

This is a lovely old family recipe for just such an occasion. The cookies are rich enough to butter up any guest to your negotiations, with just enough lemony bite to remind them who they are dealing with. I definitely recommend serving with a cup of tea. Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter

  • 1/3 cup powdered sugar

  • 1 tsp Vanilla

  • 1 2/3 cup flour

  • 2/3 cup white sugar

  • 3 tsp lemon zest

  • 3 tbsp lemon juice

  • 1 tbsp butter

  • 1 tsp cornstarch

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • 1 thoroughly beaten egg

Directions: For the cookies: cream together the sugar and butter. If you or one of your servants have a Dragur, have them do it. This part can really tire out your arm. Mix in all the other ingredients and put it in the icebox for about 30 minutes. If you are in a hurry, get a necromancer to cast that healing spell on it, the one that makes your arm go numb. Just get it chilled.

Shape the dough into balls the size of a small materia packet. Press your thumb down in the center of each to make a little well for the filling. If you have talons that make doing so difficult, try using the back of your index claw. It works for me.

Bake the cookies at 350 degrees until they are golden brown, and then let them cool.

Filling: Put all the ingredients in a small pot, and heat over a dying fire (low heat). Stir every minute or two for about half an hour until it gets thick and smooth. Let it cool.

To finish, put a dollop of the filling into each of the thumbprints of the cookies. Give thanks to the First Lich and then they are all ready to be served!

Remember, the secret to diplomatic success is to treat everyone like a VIP, and keep a well maintained army.

Yours, Virtue, Lady of Straavin
